University of Minnesota

Michèle M. Mazzocco is Professor of Developmental Psychology at the Institute of Child Development at the University of Minnesota where she is also Director of the Math and Numeracy Lab. Dr. Mazzocco's research focuses on cognitive development, with a focus on typical and atypical numerical cognition in children and adults and how individual differences in mathematical and other cognitive skills may contribute to mathematics learning. As a former classroom teacher, she is particularly interested in the practical implications of her work for assessing and supporting mathematical thinking in young children and evaluating contributions to children’s mathematics learning and learning difficulties. Dr. Mazzocco’s research has included longitudinal studies in early childhood, and longitudinal studies from early childhood through high school. Her more recent research focuses on how early learning experiences and other contexts shape children's emerging number concepts, and how individual differences in children's numerical, linguistic, and executive function skills interact to influence mathematics achievement in the early school years.
